Wi-Fi vouchers in Nigeria: selling Wi-Fi for cash, safely

How Wi-Fi voucher systems work, when to use vouchers instead of online payments, how to print and sell them, and how to use sales agents without losing money.

Not every customer wants to pay online. Some prefer cash, some don't have a card to hand, and some places (event centres, busy counters) move faster with a printed code. Vouchers let you sell Wi-Fi for cash without giving up control.

How a Wi-Fi voucher works

A voucher is a one-time code tied to a plan. The customer joins your Wi-Fi, chooses I have a voucher, types the code, and they're online with that plan's time and data. Once a code is used, it can't be used again.

When to use vouchers

  • Cash customers at a counter or reception.
  • Events, where queues move faster with pre-printed cards.
  • Bundles, such as Wi-Fi included with a room, a meal or a membership.
  • Agents who resell Wi-Fi around an estate or campus.

Online payments are still best for most customers (they're instant and nothing needs printing), so offer both.

Keeping vouchers safe

Vouchers are like cash, so treat them that way:

  • Print only what you need. Unused codes are money sitting in a drawer.
  • Know which batch is which, with a prefix per batch or per seller.
  • Disable a lost code or batch immediately; if a code was already used, its access should be revoked too.
  • Reconcile what was printed against what was sold and used.

In Wispot, voucher codes are stored securely (as keyed hashes, not plain text), each batch has its own prefix and unit price, and you can disable single codes or void a whole batch's unused codes.

Selling through agents

Agents (a shop owner, a resident, a staff member) can sell vouchers for you and earn a commission. The risk is agents who collect money and don't pay you. A float system avoids this:

  1. The agent pays you upfront to top up their float.
  2. They generate vouchers from their float at their agent price.
  3. Unused codes go back to their float if a batch is voided.

The agent can only spend what they've already paid, so you're never owed money. In Wispot, agents get their own login that only shows their float and batches, never your customers' details. See Agents.

Printing

Print vouchers on plain A4 paper as cut-out cards, with the plan name, price and code clearly visible, plus a line telling people how to use them. Wispot's print sheet does this for you. See Vouchers and cash sales.

Recording cash sales without vouchers

Sometimes it's easier to take cash and give a customer access directly. Recording it as a cash sale against the customer keeps your records and reports complete, so your cash and online sales add up in one statement.
