Connect your MikroTik router

Register your router, run the setup script we generate, and confirm it is online. Includes what the script changes and how to undo it.

Your MikroTik becomes the gateway for a location. Setup takes about 15 minutes.

Before you start

  • A MikroTik running RouterOS 7, reachable with Winbox or a terminal.
  • Your access points connected behind the router, on a guest network (a bridge or VLAN) with its own IP pool and DHCP server. The script doesn't create or change these.
  • A backup of the router. The script makes one too, but keep your own.

1. Register the gateway

Open Get started, or the location's page, and register a gateway. Give it a name (for example "Main hall") and pick the model. We generate:

  • a setup script (.rsc file) for this router, and
  • a one-time setup token inside it, valid for 24 hours.

2. Read the script, then run it

The script is plain text and commented. It:

  1. backs up the router,
  2. creates a secure WireGuard tunnel to Wispot,
  3. points the hotspot at Wispot for sign-ins (RADIUS),
  4. allows payment pages through before sign-in (the walled garden),
  5. sets up the hotspot on your guest network,
  6. schedules a small heartbeat so we know the router is online, and
  7. downloads this location's login page, which sends phones straight to your Wi-Fi page.

At the top of the script, set the names of your guest interface and IP pool. Upload the file to the router (drag it into Winbox's Files), then import it from the terminal:

/import file-name=hotspot-setup-YOUR-GATEWAY.rsc

3. Check it is online

Within a few minutes the gateway shows Online on the location page, and the Connect your router step ticks itself off. If it stays offline, see troubleshooting.

Undo

Restore the backup the script made (/system backup load), or remove the hotspot, the WireGuard interface and the RADIUS entry it added. Nothing outside those is changed.

Remote care (beta)

Once a router is set up, its card on the location page has Remote care buttons:

  • Restart router: everyone drops for about a minute; paid plans keep their time.
  • Back up settings: saves the router's configuration here (RouterOS leaves passwords and keys out of exports). The latest 10 are kept for download.
  • Refresh allowed sites: updates the sites phones can open before paying, such as payment checkout pages.
  • Refresh login page: downloads the latest login page.

The router checks in every minute and picks up one action at a time, so give it a minute or two. The router only runs these four fixed actions, which are written into its setup script. Wispot can't send it any other commands.

Router set up before remote care existed? Generate a new setup script from the location page and run it again. It's safe to re-run: it backs up first, replaces its own heartbeat, and keeps your existing settings. Until you do, actions show "No reply from the router".

Remote care hasn't yet been tested on every RouterOS version. If an action fails, the setup script and the router's log (/log print where message~"hsp") are the first things to check.
