Design plans that sell

Time, data, speed and device limits, free plans and fair use: how to build plans customers understand and that protect your connection.

A plan is what customers buy: for example "1 hour · 1 GB" or "Weekly · 20 GB". Everything you set is enforced by your router, not left to trust.

What you can set

  • Price in your workspace's currency. Set 0 for a free plan: each person can claim it once.
  • Duration in minutes, hours or days. The clock starts when payment is confirmed.
  • Data allowance, or leave empty for unlimited. Upload and download both count.
  • Devices: up to 20 devices can share one plan (and one data allowance).
  • Speed limits for download and upload, so one customer can't slow everyone else down.
  • Fair use: after a data threshold, slow the customer down instead of cutting them off. It makes unlimited plans safe to sell.
  • Where it's sold: every location, or one.

Tips from venues that sell well

  • Offer a short plan and a day pass. Most people choose between "just now" and "the whole day".
  • Show the value. "Day pass · 5 GB" beats "Plan B".
  • Use a free 15-minute plan to let first-timers try you, then upsell.
  • Weekly and monthly plans suit hotels, hostels, estates and co-working spaces.

Changing and retiring plans

Changing a plan never affects people who already bought it. Each purchase keeps a copy of the plan as it was. A plan that has been sold can't be deleted; take it off sale instead.
